Add VAT to a net price or remove it from a gross price. Enter the amount and the VAT rate and choose whether the amount already includes VAT; the calculator shows the net price, the VAT and the gross price.
Gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100) · Net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
To add VAT, multiply the net price by the rate. To remove VAT from a price that includes it, divide by 1 plus the rate – subtracting the rate from the gross price would give the wrong amount. The same calculation works for GST and sales tax.
At a rate of 20%, a net price of 100 becomes 120 with VAT. A gross price of 120 contains 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 net and 20 of VAT.
Because VAT is calculated on the net price: 20% of 120 is 24, but the VAT included in 120 at 20% is only 20.
For example 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain and 22% in Italy; reduced rates apply to some goods.
Yes, enter the GST or sales tax rate instead of the VAT rate.
